In a normal year with a normal movie release calendar, we probably wouldn't be saying this, but as it stands, it's true: Sonic The Hedgehog was one of the most entertaining movies of 2020.

As video game adaptations go, it was solid (not that there's a high bar to reach!), and because it hit cinemas just before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, it enjoyed a healthy box-office run, grossing $319 million worldwide against an estimated $80 million - $90 million budget.

Because of these financial results, Paramount now has a franchise on its hands, and a sequel - simply titled Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - is currently in production. But after that? The studio reportedly has an eye on expanding the Sonic universe even further.

According to industry insider and prominent scooper Daniel Richtman, Paramount is "considering" developing a spinoff starring Jim Carrey's villain, Dr. Robotnik, which will presumably be dependant upon Sonic The Hedgehog 2's success.

As always, whispers like this should be taken with a grain of salt, but if Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is as popular as the first, then producing a Robotnik spinoff would be an understandable move on Paramount's part.

That popularity will give them a strong foundation right off the bat, and with Carrey enjoying something of a career resurgence at the moment (Sonic aside, a third Ace Ventura movie is also in the works, which he will presumably return for), if a Robotnik movie is ever going to happen... then now is the perfect time.
