2014 indie-thriller It Follows found critical acclaim for its original approach to the horror genre. We follow Jay, who has become infected with a supernaturally-charged STD that means she will be haunted, hunted and murdered by supernatural forces unless she can pass it on to someone else. In Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley's The Beauty, we have a deeper exploration into this subject.

Focusing less on the supernatural and more on a twisted reflection on our societal obsessions with 'true' beauty, The Beauty follows a new venereal disease that makes the infected person more beautiful over time. After this becomes a mainstream fad and many people are willingly getting infected, we start to see cases of people dying in bizarre, violent ways. The story follows partners Vaughn and Foster as they uncover the mysteries behind the STD, and if the government is playing a part in the events.

Heavily inspired by The Twilight Zone, the fear in The Beauty is to be found in the grizzly deaths, unsettling cases and conspiracies, and the largely unexplored form of body horror. As a society, just how much are we willing to sacrifice to be considered beautiful?
