8 Things Everybody Has Wrong About Batman V Superman

3. The Studio Always Knew That Ben Affleck Would Be A Controversial Choice

Movie-goers like to assume that the people running Hollywood are stupider than they are, and whilst that's true in some cases, in most cases it really isn't. Case in point: Ben Affleck being cast as Batman, which was originally deemed to be a mistake by the majority. And yet one of the most bizarre things to have come out of Affleck's casting as the next Bruce Wayne stems from the overwhelmingly negative reaction that met the initial announcement, with Batman fans from all over the world fighting to tell Hollywood how dumb and crazy and misguided they were for opting for such a bizarre choice of actor. The only dumb thing would be to assume that Hollywood didn't expect a backlash when they cast Affleck. On the contrary, it's probably what they planned for all along. You don't cast somebody with a history like Ben Affleck unless you're purposely trying to create a sense of controversy. What most forgot in the moment was that casting Affleck got everyone talking about Batman v Superman - it started a huge, sprawling conversation. Also: the studio actually warned Affleck that casting him would likely instigate a backlash. In the actor's own words, speaking on Last Night With Jimmy Fallon, he revealed as much:
"I said; 'Okay, I really want to do this.' And people from the studio were like, we're thrilled, we're so excited, and we arranged it, and then they said... listen, we want to talk to you, because people go through this process and it can be trying. And I said: 'What do you mean?" So we wanna show you some of the reactions that past cast members have got on the internet. I said: 'I'm a big boy.' They said: 'Just don't use the internet for a few days."
Even if you're against Affleck's casting in the role, chances are you'll still go to see the movie anyway; those who want him to fail will still pay the price of a ticket to do so. Indeed, casting Affleck was something akin to a stroke of genius - especially if he turns out to have been a great choice all along. It's silly to think that Warner Bros. ever thought otherwise.
