8 Things Movies Always Get Wrong About Drugs

1. Coffee Sobers You Up

If you're particularly feeling the effects of one drug (yes, alcohol is a drug), then the last thing you would logically want to do is top yourself up with more drugs (yes, caffeine is also a drug).

As well as being a common movie trope, this is also a favourite piece of advice from those irritatingly interfering people at parties, who take it upon themselves to brew up a revolting coffee for your drunk mate whilst putting them into a ham-fisted "recovery position" (you know the ones). Well, fortunately, you can tell them where to stick their coffee, because not only will it not do anything to help sober a drunk up, but it's actively dangerous to mix caffeine and alcohol.

Whilst caffeine won't sober you up, it will make you feel more sober, causing you to drink even more, to a potentially lethal level. As well as this, a sleepy drunk person is likely to go and lie down somewhere, an energised, "sober" drunk person is more likely to do things like, say, get behind the wheel.

As far as miracle cures are concerned, nothing apart from time will sober you up once the alcohol, or the drug, hits your bloodstream. Better to just get a good night's sleep and maybe learn your lesson for next time (or not, I'm not your mum).
