8 Things That Almost Happened In Indiana Jones Movies
5. Indiana Jones Marries A Linguist
Plans for a fourth Indiana Jones movie stretch all the way back to the 1990s, and two things were always on his roadmap: aliens and marriage.
Both of these things date back to a 1993 screenplay called Indiana Jones And The Saucermen From Mars, but the identity of his bride shifted dramatically by the time Indy 4 found its final format.
In the initial draft, Doctor Jones weds a linguist by the name of Dr Elaine McGregor, and their church ceremony would have been cameo-tastic, with Marion, Willie, Sallah and Henry Jones Senior all present.
The rest of the script is based around the discovery of alien bodies and a strange stone cylinder which Indy and his love interest must decode while fighting off Cold War-era Russians, another aspect of the story which was carried over to Crystal Skull.
As hated as the extraterrestrials were in the fourth movie, this early script proves they were part of the plan from the beginning, and in fairness, the whole alien thing is in keeping with the pulpy B-movies Indiana Jones was originally inspired by.
So, why did this version of Indy 4 come apart and Crystal Skull didn't? Apparently Independence Day was to blame. When Lucas and Spielberg watched Roland Emmerich's alien invision flick, they felt their idea was too similar.
