8 Times Film Stars Took On Social 'Norms' On Sexuality

3. Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce And Terence Stamp In Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Warner Bros

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert takes on a lot of LGBT issues throughout its 104 minute running time.

As Guy Pearce, Terence Stamp and Hugo Weaving embark on a quest across the desert to deliver their drag act, they face a lot of personal hardships along the way. They are constantly judged for being gay, bisexual or transgender and for dressing in drag.

While most insults come from outsiders, sometimes tensions build within the group. For example, when Pearce's character calls Stamp's character by her birth name, Ralph. It is also discovered that Weaving's character has a son, by a woman, which leads the group to judge him on his sexuality. Weaving explains that he doesn't know whether he is gay, straight or bisexual, although he does have a boyfriend.

Stamp's character teaches audiences about the struggles that transgender people may face in finding good romantic relationships. Her partner dies at the start of the film, who she says it took a lot of money to get. Later, she shows apprehension in developing a new romance.

Weaving's character's relationship with his son is deeply heartwarming, as he explores the fear of coming out to him and learns that sometimes your loved ones may be more accepting than you think.

It's a deeply moving and uplifting film on a great number of levels.
