At the 25th anniversary event for The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in 2010, Amber Heard came out.

The actress, who attended the event with her then-partner Tasya van Ree, revealed that she does not wish to be labelled as straight or gay, having had good relationships with both male and female partners.

When asked about why she chose to come out, in an interview with AfterEllen.com she said that, when she became aware of her role in the media, she began to ask herself if she was 'part of the problem'. She said "when millions and millions of hard-working, tax paying Americans are denied their rights and denied their equality, you have to ask yourself what are the factors that are an endemic problem and that's what this is."

Heard explained that she felt she could come out because attitudes are changing, which she credited GLAAD on helping with.

She is now married to Johnny Depp, who she began dating in 2012 and wed in 2015.
