8 Times MCU Trailers Showed Way Too Much

5. Mjolnir's Destruction - Thor: Ragnarok

Thor has seen more tragedy throughout his time in the MCU than anybody, even Wanda Maximoff. He lost his bother (several times), his best friend, both parents, his home, he was defeated by Thanos, and while fighting Hela he lost his hammer. The latter of these losses was incredibly spoiled in the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok.

Up until this point, Mjolnir had been arguably the greatest weapon in all of the MCU, and its destruction, particularly at the hands of Hela, was a huge moment. This would have been jaw-dropping to witness in the cinema, on a similar level to seeing Thor utilise his new lightning power, but instead, everyone already knew that it was coming.

This was a key point in the story, a key point in Thor’s entire MCU narrative, and it was utterly ruined by Marvel’s marketing machine. Obviously, Hela had to be built up as a real threat to Thor in the trailer to create a buzz for the movie, but crushing Mjolnir wasn’t needed for this.

There was already footage of her using her power, her necrosword, Fenris, and the destruction of Asgard, as well a chilling voiceover from Cate Blanchett. Why needlessly spoil such a huge, pivotal moment?
