8 Upcoming Films That Will Change Everything

7. Joker - DCs Ability To Make Dark Movies

Captain Marvel
Warner Bros

The Dark Knight series really was DC's claim to fame. Taking Batman and spinning him as a serious, gritty, and intensely dark character, the studio has tried to replicate its success to no end with later releases - and considering The Dark Knight itself sits comfortably at number 3 on IMDb's top 250 films of all time, and more importantly earning over $1 billion in box office revenue, you can't really blame them.

Whilst lightning may have struck the trilogy and sent it soaring into wider popularity, it sure hasn't struck in the same way for DC since. So heading back to what made that franchise so special with Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning depiction of Batman's greatest enemy, it seems smart to get Joaquin Phoenix in for a prequel. Smart, but also incredibly risky.

Success for Joker means another foray into the world of intense, gravelly-voiced superhero movies for DC, and failure will ultimately dictate that DC can't feasibly achieve The Dark Knight level movies ever again. Joker not hitting the mark will ostracise the company from their most successful work indefinitely, meaning more movies that chase at Marvel's light-hearted heels.

Either way, it's a grease-painted attempt at jazzing up DC's particularly wobbly line up. Let's just hope it doesn't sink them entirely...
