8 Upcoming Movie Sequels Destined To Fail

Is there any chance Avatar 2 and Indiana Jones 5 turn out good?

So many times, moviegoers have seen sequels, prequels and spin-offs serve up something fantastic.

When looking back through the history of cinema, some of the absolute all-time best films are sequels. The Empire Strikes Back, anyone? How about The Godfather Part II? Or Aliens? Maybe Terminator 2: Judgment Day? All sequel pictures, all stunning pieces of cinema.

Of course, it's not always the case that a sequel is going to hit a home run. In fact, so many times we've seen sequels stumble and fall - whether that's due to a rushed turnaround in production, an awful plot, or simply one too many times trying to milk the franchise cow dry.

As is the norm, there are a whole host of sequels currently on the horizon. Actually, some of them should've been here already but, well, 2020 was 2020. Still, just knowing that these follow-up offerings are on the table is enough to give some film fans something to be excited for.

Unfortunately though, so many of these upcoming sequels look destined to fail - and here's exactly why that's the case for the following eight impending releases.

Not only Avatar 2, but there is a very real possibility that James Cameron's plans for Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 will all stumble their respective ways to disappointment.

For those who weren't aware, yes, the ever-innovative and forward-thinking Cameron has boldly announced plans for a ludicrous four Avatar sequels. Not just that, but Cameron has already shot Avatar 2 and large parts of Avatar 3.

There's no doubting that 2009's Avatar is a truly revolutionary movie. After the initial 3D boom of the 1980s had died a death, Cameron led the charge for a 3D revival. A revival that now had huge budgets behind it and that had extremely advanced technology that could do justice to the vision of filmmakers. As such, Avatar and its over $2.7 billion global box office haul broke all kinds of records - even if the plot was paper thin.

With the bloom once again off the rose where 3D is concerned, and with it now over a decade since Avatar's release, one has to ask the question of just how much demand there is for one Avatar sequel, let alone four of them.

Given how these sequels are set to cost a combined $1 billion, and add in the current minimal audience interest in a return to Pandora - not to mention the ongoing global situation that's caused Avatar 2 to be delayed to 2022 - and Avatar 2 seems destined to fail.
