8 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are Doomed To Fail
7. Top Gun: Maverick
And speaking of sequels that take too long, Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2019, 33 years after the original first opened. Geez.
Indiana Jones 4, Independence Day 2, Dumb and Dumber 2 and Zoolander 2, amongst many, many others, all proved that if you wait too long to release a sequel, you can lose some of that magic, that special something that made the original movies hits at specific points in time.
Is Top Gun going to have the same impact 33 years later? All signs point to no. That's a very long wait in-between movies, and a lot of today's moviegoers probably haven't even seen the first one, and getting them to care about this sequel will be tough.
Plus, Tom Cruise isn't the bankable star he once was (Mission: Impossible aside), and Maverick director Joseph Kosinski hasn't yet delivered a movie that critics and audiences both loved (Oblivion, Tron: Legacy and Only The Brave either had money or good reviews - never both), so it's hard to be confident he'll break that streak here.
