8 Upcoming Movies That It's Actually Worth Getting Excited About
3. Erm... It's Lego... It's Batman... - The Lego Batman Movie
It's seems crazy to think LEGO was once just plastic bricks that doubled as immensely effective foot jabbers. Now they're behind three major games franchises (the beloved third-person action adventures that adapt classic movies, the amibo-aping Dimensions and a Minecraft clone), several cartoons featuring everyone's favourite Star Wars characters and superheroes, and several deliriously fun themeparks. And, of course, movies. The Lego Movie was one of the biggest surprises of 2014, taking what sounded like the very nadir of cynically-conceived cinema and delivering instead a shockingly subversive comedy with one of the smartest scripts in recent memory. A box office hit, Phil Lord and Chris Miller's film led to record profits for The LEGO Group, so it's no real surprise there's more movies to come. Many more. These include a straight-up sequel, a film based on the Ninjago brand, an unknown spin-off called Billion Brick Race and, biggest of all, The Lego Batman Movie, which brings back Will Arnett as the plastic-caped crusader and adds Michael Cera and Zach Galifianakis as Robin and the Joker respectively. The first movie's Batman was a delight; a super serious parody of the archetypal character, he was like Pete Holmes' CollegeHumor Badman made family friendly. Promoting him to the lead will greatly open the comic book scope - instead of jokes about his black attire and fondness for bat-puns, there's the opportunity to parody all elements of the character's history, from Adam West to Ben Affleck (and they both need some light ribbing).
