9 Ways The Amazing Spider-Man Almost Turned Out Awesome
4. Costume Progression
There's always some suspension of disbelief when it comes to Spider-Man's costume. How exactly is a dorky high schooler manage to make a perfectly fitted body suit without any presumed previous experience? At least making his own webbing was preempted by him being a science prodigy.
With that in mind, the costume seen in The Amazing Spider-Man made some sense. It slowly evolved over the first half of the movie and integrated household items into it (the eyes are the lenses of sunglasses), providing one of the few parts of these movies that actually felt more sensible than the Sam Raimi equivalent (even if Maguire's lycra was cooler). Not everyone was on board, so for the sequel Webb and co. mixed it up, going for a style more reminiscent of the classical costume.
There's once again logic to this - as Spidey becomes more established, he'd change up his look in gradual ways. Released concept art shows this as a planned progression of the first's, with a design more in common with the iconic comic look and wider eyes allowing for better sight in combat. Three slightly different versions were released, all of which would have been acceptible.
And what did they go with? A go-for-broke cartoon avatar that held maximum marketability, but none of the in-universe sense. Good job guys.
