8 Worst Films Directed By Oscar Winners
6. Dr Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine (1965)
Let no one say that an Oscar win guarantees better projects for a filmmaker: despite winning Best Director for 1931’s Skippy (not the story of a kangaroo, alas), Norman Taurog went on to direct a string of forgettable comedies, including nine for Elvis Presley. Before retiring in 1968 he directed Dr Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine, your typical movie about a supervillain with an army of bikini-clad robots.
Played by Vincent Price, Dr Goldfoot is little more than a common thief whose diabolical master plan involves sending his robot army to seduce the world’s richest men and coerce them into signing over their assets. Imagine The Stepford Wives done as a cringeworthy screwball farce, and you’re on the right lines.
Co-starring Beach Party regular Frankie Avalon, Dr Goldfoot was originally intended to stick to the formula of the time and feature several songs. Rumors persist that a scene where Price extols the virtues of his bikini machine in song was shot and cut out, so check your attic.
