8 Worst Films Directed By Oscar Winners

5. The Guardian (1990)

Piranha 2 The Spawning
Universal Pictures

After winning Best Director for The French Connection (1971), William Friedkin enjoyed his biggest commercial success with The Exorcist (1973), but a series of flops and disappointments (anyone remember Deal Of The Century with Chevy Chase?) sent him scurrying back to the horror genre in search of a hit.

He should’ve chosen more wisely because The Guardian is one of the funniest “scary” movies you’ll ever see, a jaw dropping tale about an evil British nanny who feeds babies to trees, can survive being hit by a jeep and likes to get naked a lot. Oh, and she can fly.

That’s right, gang – the director of The Exorcist made a movie about a flying nanny, and she ain’t Mary Poppins. Camilla (Jenny Seagrove) preys on yuppie couples, gaining their confidence before abducting their new born, which she feeds to her boyfriend, a walking tree with rubbery limbs and a taste for baby cells.

They help him make wood or something. Camilla’s constant disrobing was enough for yours truly, but that is a personal matter and enough said.
