4. The Fly II (1989)
After winning Best Makeup for The Fly (1986), Chris Walas was handed the reins on this sequel, proving that in Hollywood no good work goes unpunished.
Essentially a comic book retelling of the original, The Fly II focuses on Martin Brundle (not, it must be said, the racing driver), the son of Seth “Brundlefly” Brundle, and in a perfect example of “smart but stupid” he’s working on a teleportation programme, just like daddy did. Also like his old man, he’s slowly transforming into a monster and a cackling Evil Genius thinks he’s an important evolutionary breakthrough that will make him the most powerful person on earth….somehow.
In one of the film’s many misjudged scenes, Martin realizes that the Evil Genius is keeping his dog, the victim of a failed experiment, chained up in a secret lab. In a would-be touching scene, our hero sneaks in to perform a mercy killing, which is understandable because his pet resembles the Tasmanian Devil (from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons) at the end of a decades-long booze-coke-hookers binge.
So upsetting for Martin (but not the audience) is this sequence that when a colleague attempts to comfort him, he tells her: “Stay out of my sector! You no longer have clearance!”
