9 Abandoned Sequel Plots That Sound Better Than The Movies We Got

1. The Original Version Of Day Of The Dead

The Day Of The Dead we have is damn good; it carries an unrelentingly bleak tone, it has some of the finest zombie makeup effects ever and it’s become a genre touchstone. It’s still a compromised version of George Romero’s original idea, though, since he set out to make a “Gone With The Wind” style zombie epic.

His original script had a bigger scope and featured an island military base that had a functioning society. Most of the island was under the thumb of an evil governor and his henchmen, who were training groups of zombies to become soldiers. The script featured more characters and subplots, and the finale would have been loaded with action when the oppressed islanders revolt.

The issue was the script was far too epic, and since Romero refused to tone down the violence he couldn’t get it funded. Eventually, the director decided it was better to have less cash and complete creative control, so his budget was cut in half and the script was drastically rewritten.

It’s still a great movie, but the original vision could have been Romero’s crowning masterpiece.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
