9 Actors Who Hated Working On Harry Potter Movies
4. Alan Rickman (Severus Snape)
The late, great Alan Rickman gave an instantly iconic performance in the Potter series as Severus Snape, and as much as the part won him a legion of young new admirers, Rickman himself wasn't all that fussed about the role.
When a collection of Rickman's personal letters were auctioned off in 2018, the contents revealed that Rickman wasn't at all happy with how director David Yates approached his character in the series' latter four films. One of the letters Rickman penned to himself said:
"Inside Snape's Head. It's as if David Yates has decided that this is not important in the scheme of things i.e. teen audience appeal."
In another letter, series producer David Heyman contritely wrote to the actor in an attempt to soothe his concerns about the role:
"Thank you for making HP2 a success. I know, at times, you are frustrated but please know that you are an integral part of the films. And you are brilliant."
Perhaps that's the ultimate testament to Rickman's sublime work across the franchise, that despite having major creative misgivings with how Snape was presented, he did everything within his considerable abilities to do it justice regardless. And that he certainly did.
