9 Actors Who Sacrificed Everything For Terrible Movies

2. Christian Bale Forgets Prosthetics Exist - Vice (2018)

Having been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, Vice is easily the best movie on this list. That being said, it also represents all that's wrong with the Academy Awards, proving that if you radically change your appearance and make a biopic about a controversial figure, you're sure to be noticed by the Academy.

That's not to bash on Christian Bale's commitment to the film, which sees him play Dick Cheney before and during the politician's time as Vice President.

For the role, Bale (no stranger to drastic physical changes) gained 40 pounds, shaved his head and bleached his eyebrows. He also spent a lot of time "working out his neck" so that it would appear bigger on screen.

Bale later admitted that he called up Gary Oldman, who had just portrayed Winston Churchill, only to learn from the actor that prosthetics would have helped him get into the role without endangering his health for the one-hundredth time.

The results made Bale look the part, sure, but the film, for all its charm and the striking ensemble, really wasn't that compelling a watch, and stands as a classic example of a biopic unwilling to challenge itself and its subject matter.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
