9 Almost-Great Movie Moments Ruined By Shoddy CGI
6. The Jetpack And The Rocket Launcher - Kick-Ass
By the time Matthew Vaughn made Kick-Ass his high-reaching-low-success use of CGI appeared to have been tempered. With no one to please but himself (he financed the film personally) there was the time to shoot things properly. The moments where he did enhance scenes - Big Daddy's assault on the warehouse and the Internet broadcast attempted execution jump to mind - worked well and as we flew into the final act things were looking positively real.
Sadly, it was there things fell apart. Two of the major joke threads that ran through the film - Hit Girl's jetpack and that bazooka, both got their payoff in the final battle, accompanied by shoddy CGI. Considering the low budget this is somewhat excusable, but given the way Vaughn dealt with the rest of the film's action it made the moments look a little slapdash.
The worst has to be the rocket launcher payoff, a focal moment that kills the film's big bad, directly setting up the motivations for the sequel, looking like a rough edit.
