9 Almost-Great Movie Moments Ruined By Shoddy CGI
4. Escaping Limbo - Inception
Christopher Nolan is notorious for favouring of practical effects over CGI. His major set pieces - the flipping truck, the rotating hallway, the exploding football field - are enhanced in the computer, but were all shot using practical effects. This often means that when he does use more CGI, it isn't as seamless as the other effects.
In Inception, in my opinion his finest film, this is particularly an issue. The moment when Cobb and Ariadne make the 90 degree incline up the bent over street always looked a tad stilted to me, but the moment that stands out most comes much later.
When the pair and Fischer are trapped in limbo, we're initially met with a jaw dropping landscape, but as things begin to fall apart it's not just the world that falls apart, but the effects too. Ariadne and Fischer's fall to escape the world is scrappily thrown together, with seemingly no effort put in compositing the actor's into the descent. This poor effect does really pull you out of the film, sad after an hour of edge of the seat action.
Thank goodness for Hans Zimmer's rousing score pulling you back in.
