2. Caesar Flickerman - The Hunger Games
They may exist purely for expositional means, but Stanley Tucci and Toby Jones commentating duo were still such an enjoyable part of The Hunger Games. Suited in the typically garish Panem style they regularly pop up to provide some clarification of whats going on in the games. The problem is they completely betray what made the book work so well. Suzanne Collins teen novels are written from Katniss Everdeens perspective in their entirety, meaning we never leave the arena once the games begin. Ill concede some things work better on film if you actually see them (Haymitch sending Katniss help could come across more than a little contrived otherwise), but for the most part jumping to President Snow, the game controllers, or particularly the commentators negates the action, particularly when many things they explain (the cannon blast for each dead player) are pretty obvious. The only thing that I actually learnt from them was that the wasp-like creatures Katniss uses to escape the Career Tributes are actually a genetically modified version of the picnic botherers called tracker jackers. And I really dont understand why we didn't just have a character say it like in source book. Presumably Gary Ross wanted to get the most out of Tuccis salary.
