9 Awesome Movies That Were Shot In Secret

9. A Ghost Story

A Ghost Story Rooney Mara
A24

Last year's art-house hit from writer-director David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Pete's Dragon) follows a ghost (Casey Affleck in a white sheet) who remains trapped in the house he shared with his wife (Rooney Mara), and is a proud testament to the power of ideas over money.

Made for a mere $100,000, the film was shot in the summer of 2016 in total secrecy, not because Lowery wanted to keep the press and fans away from the small set, but because he wasn't at all sure how well the ambitious project would turn out. Its existence was eventually confirmed in November of that year and it premiered at Sundance two months later.

It was certainly a risky venture, being shot in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio and featuring an infamous long take sequence where Mara eats a pie for more than five minutes, but the film was ultimately one of 2017's most celebrated and visionary indie films, and grossed almost $2 million worldwide.
