Here's a film that bankrupted its studio for a slightly sexier reason than the ones listed. Though Battlefield Earth is a universally reviled film, making $29 million against a $44 million budget, the FBI soon enough began investigating Franchise Pictures' finances following the film's failure, as they believed that the company may have been scamming investors by over-inflating the cost of productions to line their own pockets. Production company Intertainment AG, who had co-financed many films with Franchise, alleged that they had been taken to town to the tune of around $75 million during their partnership, with $31 million of that being from Battlefield Earth. Intertainment won their legal fight and Franchise had to pay $121.7 million in damages, which effectively bankrupted them. Talk about being kicked when you're already down...
