9 Beloved Films With Boring Scenes That Everybody Ignores

3. Pacific Rim - Compatibility Test

Pacific Rim is a movie where giant robots hit giant monsters. The marketing couldn't stress that enough. Which makes it strange that after not having giant robots and giant monsters fight in place of some much needed plot development, the next big fight scene is between two humans in a completely no-risk situation. In an attempt to prove that he and Mako are drift compatible (don't ask), our hero Raleigh challenges her to a stick fight (again, don't ask). What follows is an impressively choreographed sequence between the two of them. But, as good as it is, it is a fight between two people with sticks. Obviously any film, even one where the central conceit is that simple, needs a solid plot that makes us care for events. Pacific Rim as an idea is one robot testicle away from devolving into Transformers, so it's good to see Guillermo Del Toro adding a logic to his ideas. It's just the way he does it here is in a way that feels protracted for the sake of it, existing only to keep us from the giant robots, you know, hitting giant monsters.
