If you're a fan of memes, you will no doubt have seen the one about how many inferior films there are these days while Hollywood somehow overlooks the story of Robert Smalls who escaped a life of slavery to eventually make his way into Congress. Well, that's changing now, because Amazon Studios is developing the movie story of his life.

According to Deadline, the studio have hired director Charles Burnett to tell the tale of the daring theft and escape of Robert Smalls, a slave in 1862 Charleston. With fellow slaves and their families, he stole a paddlewheel steamer to run to freedom under the nose of the Confederate army. It's a hell of a story and the clamour to see it made should ensure an audience for Amazon's project.
