9 Big Questions After Comic-Con 2018
1. Why Do We Have To Wait So Long For Godzilla?
Of all the trailers to premiere at Comic-Con and be subsequently released online afterward, one proved itself to truly be the King.
The trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters is so mind-shatteringly awesome that it left pretty much the entire audience with one question: why does it have to be a year away!?
American audiences have never exactly been privy to great Godzilla films. Roland Emmerich's take on the franchise back in 1998 was less Godzilla film and more disaster flick about a giant lizard in New York. Even Gareth Edward's 2014 predecessor was more-or-less a rehash of a similar story, only this time including two more monsters for Godzilla to fight in the climax.
So, the fact that this trailer presents a big-budgeted blockbuster that is fully embracing the sheer insanity of the later Toho films is a dream come true. Including classic characters such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, the film's cinematography is stunning, the action looks like some of the largest-scaled setpieces ever seen, and the cast is overflowing with excellent character actors to play alongside the monsters.
Also, in a world full of near-ubiquitous barrages of sound effects and harsh music in trailers, the choice to use Debussy's Clair De Lune is refreshingly inventive and goes splendidly with Doughtery and cinematographer Lawrence Sher's breathtaking visuals.
