9 Classic Stephen King Movie Villains Who Chill You To The Bone
8. Christine - Christine (1983)
Based on the novel of the same name and directed by John Carpenter, the idea of an inanimate object - in this case a car - coming to life and acting in a villainous manner may sound silly. However, Carpenter's direction enhances the evil streak of the car so well, Christine becomes a big time scary car whose murderous inclinations know no bounds. Christine is a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury which is picked up by a nerdy, ostracised high school kid called Arnie. As he works to restore her, Arnie undergoes a massive personality change which basically renders him a jerk. Christine, meanwhile, unleashes her inner demons, killing the bullies who have made Arnie's life difficult. She seems to possess a kind of intelligence and she knows how to be crafty. But Christine is so evil, she ends up killing Arnie, who so lovingly restored her, in a wild melee. Christine's very appearance is sinister. She just looks inherently demonic and therefore her scenes as a killer car are plausible. It would be fascinating to know the full extent of Christine's evil - where it developed and how. You know that the car's previous owner died of carbon monoxide poisoning, so Christine has misbehaved before, and she seems to possess her caretaker's personality and radically change them. Christine adds a villainous twist to a tale of teenage peer bullying and social rejection.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
