9 Classic Stephen King Movie Villains Who Chill You To The Bone

9. Margaret White - Carrie (1974)

Margaret White is poor, down-trodden Carrie's mother who criminally warps and bullies her daughter. Carrie never really stood a chance with her mother who turned her into a super shy, unworldly, gawky teenager. A Christian fundamentalist to the nth degree, Margaret loves to go on religious rants at anybody who will listen, but usually upon the beleaguered Carrie. Criminally, she has never taught Carrie about the menstrual cycle, and when Carrie has her first period in the communal showers and understandably freaks out, her mother's response is to scream at her about 'the curse of blood'. She drags Carrie into a closet to pray. It is debatable as to whether Carrie develops her psychic powers of telekinesis as a result of her upbringing by Margaret, but the powers do seem to be the only way Carrie can get one over her mother. For example - when she mentions that she is going to the prom, Carrie uses her telekinetic powers to silence Margaret's disapproval. This is an emphatic victory over her mother who begins to believe Carrie is a witch but lets her go to the prom with her 'dirty pillows' on display. On the night of the prom, Margaret aggravates Carrie by deliberately hurting herself and telling Carrie - "They're all going to laugh at you". She pleads with her not to go to the prom but Carrie's psychic powers silence her again. After the whole prom inferno disaster, Carrie comes home and looks for loving reassurance from her mother. Margaret's response as a concerned mother is to stab a big carving knife into Carrie's back and watch her tumble down the stairs. She chases after Carrie with the knife and a maniacal grin on her face until Carrie puts a rather nifty end to her villainy. She psychically commands kitchen implements to hurl themselves at Margaret and they impale her, leading to painful death. This is an apt end for a crazy, inadequate, abusive person who ruined her daughter's potential and well being.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
