Image Comics’ flagship Spawn was, at one point, the bestselling superhero comic book outside of the Marvel and DC strongholds.

The series told the story of a darker knight, a resurrected anti-hero who returned to earth from the fires of hell after cutting a deal with a double-crossing demon.

It struck a chord with mature comic fans seeking substantial storytelling in a post-Watchmen world, but they found only damnation in the character’s 1997 movie debut.

Although a modest box office hit, Mark A.Z. Dippe’s Spawn adaptation was a triumph of style over substance, which is why a Batman Begins-style reboot is overdue.

Creator Todd McFarlane has been trying to get a Spawn revival off the ground since the 1990s and there are signs that a script could be about to emerge from Development Hell; so with any luck it won't be too long before Al Simmons is finally given his shot at absolution.
