9 Distractingly Bad Performances In Otherwise Great Movies

7. Mystic River: Sean Penn - Jimmy Markum

Django Unchained Quentin Tarantino
Warner Bros.

Mystic River is an absolutely excellent thriller movie that looks at grief, trauma and vengeance in a bleak, thought-provoking and unforgettable manner, but while Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon are both fantastic, Sean Penn's leading performance as Jimmy Markum is honestly pretty terrible.

Penn's performance alternates between generic broody acting and over-the-top, hammy yelling - most prominently in the infamous scene when the cops find the body of Jimmy's daughter and he bellows "IS THAT MY DAUGHTER IN THERE?" in an unintentionally hilarious manner - and as such he's the most glaring flaw in an otherwise strong film.

Weak acting like this in what is otherwise such a brilliantly acted film is strange enough, but what's stranger still is that Penn won Best Actor for this at the 2004 Oscars, making this by far one of the worst Oscar-winning performances of the 21st century.
