9 Distractingly Bad Performances In Otherwise Great Movies

5. Brokeback Mountain: Anne Hathaway - Lureen Newsome Twist

Django Unchained Quentin Tarantino
Focus Features

Brokeback Mountain is a powerful, heart-breaking romantic Western that's not only an important film which brought LGBT movies into the mainstream, but is a generally awesome one too. It's further lifted up by the amazing performances of its cast, including the much-missed Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams but there's one big exception and that's Anne Hathaway, who plays Jack's (Gyllenhaal) wife.

Anne Hathaway is quite a lucky actress on the whole. She's done very well for herself but she's tended to be serviceable without ever being great and she's done almost nothing noteworthy since winning the Oscar for her career-best turn in Les Miserables, so how strong an actress she really is is debatable.

Anyhow, her acting chops certainly weren't too well-developed in this early performance, in which she gives a one-note and flat turn that sticks out like a sore-thumb in a film with many powerhouse performances. She also fatally undermines one of the film's big emotional scenes near the end when she talks to Heath Ledger's character on the phone and sounds thoroughly disinterested in the whole thing.
