9 Distractingly Bad Performances In Otherwise Great Movies

3. Hereditary: Alex Wolff - Peter Graham

Django Unchained Quentin Tarantino
A24

Hereditary, despite its terrible ending, is a mostly strong horror film that effortlessly blends powerful drama with horrifying shocks and also features a monumental lead performance from Toni Collette. She shares many scenes with Alex Wolff, who plays her character's son, and therefore is often required to salvage those scenes.

Wolff is the secondary protagonist of the film and, since he plays a teenager dealing with the accidental death of his sister (which he was partly responsible for), this is a very weighty and challenging role which any young actor would struggle with. Unfortunately, at this time, Wolff just wasn't quite able to pull this off.

In scenes when he's supposed to be angry or distressed he just comes across as whiny and in various emotionally intense scenes he's constantly doing a weird, unintentionally hilarious whimpering noise which reduced everyone at the screening I attended to hysterics every single time.

It's never fun to criticise a younger actor, but Wolff's performance in Hereditary was overall underwhelming.
