9 Famous Comedians Who Were Brutally Unfunny In Movies
9. Chris Rock
Look, not every role is going to be a winner. Even the greatest comedic actors of all time have proven that. Eddie Murphy's had his flops, as has Steve Martin and Bill Murray. What's so disconcerting about Chris Rock's humorless comedies, though, is how easily he seems to sink into the unfunny roles. It's also quite jarring to read through his filmography and see adventurous comedies like CB4 and Pootie Tang spliced in there with such toothless, remarkably vacant fare like Down to Earth and Head of State. The former is nothing more than a throwaway remake of Heaven Can Wait, which somehow manages to make less funny than Warren Beatty was in the original. Let that sink in...Chris Rock Warren Beatty in a comedy. As for Head of State, the premise alone seemed like a goldmine in a pre-Obama America: Rock stars as a black presidential candidate thrust into the role after the Democratic president elect dies suddenly. Imagine the hilarity! Now imagine Chris Rock forcibly removing that hilarity from the set, tossing it out the door into the backlot, and having one of his bodyguards beat the living hell out of it with a VHS copy of Nutty Professor 2: Meet the Klumps. Rock's still capable of turning in hilarious performances in movies, particularly in bit roles (Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, even Lethal Weapon 4). But he's only produced a couple of decent leading roles over the span of his 25-plus-years of making movies.
