9 Films That Changed Due To Fan Backlash
1. Sonic The Hedgehog
Most of the films on this list only made small changes in response to fan backlash, and a lot were able to apply said changes before cameras started rolling. But the upcoming live-action adaptation of Sonic The Hedgehog is going to be implementing a full-on redesign of its title character months after principle photography wrapped, and only half a year out from the film's proposed release date.
Shortly after the film's trailer hit the web on 30 April 2019 - which has over 600,000 dislikes on Paramount's official YouTube channel - pretty much the entire internet rose up against the design of Sonic, with his tiny eyes, gloveless hands, and freakishly human proportions inspiring horror and confusion in those of us who grew up playing the character's games.
The negative response was so huge that the filmmakers just couldn't ignore it. A few days after the backlash hit, director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter and stated that he and his team would be changing Sonic's design in order to make him "the best" version possible.
The film is slated to come out this November, so the visual effects department really doesn't have a lot of time to make such huge alterations to their film. Remember the last time a major Hollywood blockbuster had to crunch its visual effects? We got Henry Cavill's dodgy upper lip.
Let's hope Sonic fares a bit better.
