9 Films You Didn't Know Were Nominated As Worst Picture
2. Big Daddy (1999)
Most people are in agreement when it comes to Adam Sandler’s career; it started off great and it's mostly been terrible since. Whilst most of his films are enjoyable on some level, seven of them have received a Worst Picture nominated, with Sandler himself being nominated as Worst Actor a total of 11 times.
The most surprising film nomination by far is for Big Daddy, which is largely regarded as one of Sandler’s best films during his prime. The tale of unlikely redemption is genuinely touching: it’s got heart, it’s got laughs and it’s thoroughly enjoyable, which is the perfect formula for an old school Adam Sandler film.
On top of that, five-year-old Julian, played by Cole and Dylan Sprouse, is absolutely adorable, with perfect comedic delivery to match Sandler's performance.
The film explores the themes of love, life and growing up – which is not just limited to children – and are what makes the film heart-warming and somewhat relatable. And that surprising depth is what makes it so much more than the usual throw-away, Sandler-brand goon comedy.
