9 Great Film Performances From Non-Actors

1. Roddy Piper - They Live

There are a few mysteries in the universe that will probably never be solved. One, of course, is the meaning of life. A close second would have to be questioning why Roddy Piper was never properly acknowledged by the 1987 Academy Awards for his work in They Live. Only the "Hot Rod" could convincingly play a drifter who stumbles across a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the aliens hiding among us, disguised as ordinary people. He'll even participate in the longest fist fight in cinematic history, if it means saving the world. So how does a thespian like Roddy Piper get overlooked come award time? It's most likely that the Academy knew that to nominate Roddy Piper for Best Actor or Coolest Human Being they'd have to show the clip where he walks into a bank and utters the famous line, "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all of bubblegum." Hollywood's best and brightest would then understandably get up and quit their respective professions, on the spot, knowing that they would never achieve the same level of sheer awesomeness that Piper managed in one scene. Again, most likely scenario, but it's also possible that Hollywood is just full of aliens and they know Roddy has their number.
