Recent horror hit Men is the latest offering from director Alex Garland. Following the life of a young woman, Harper, as she embarks on a solo holiday, the film unfolds the truth of the tragedy which befell her before her trip.

From the title alone you can sort of guess this movie is going to be about the relationship between men and women, more specifically referring to the idea of men ‘all being the same.’ There are several motifs repeated throughout, including references to nature and religion and - of course - all but a couple of the men in the movie literally being played by the same actor (Rory Kinnear).

Towards the end of the film there’s a dramatic sequence in which Harper has to fight away the men of the town. The injuries they gain are shared across each body, but before each one is inflicted you can actually already guess what they’ll look like in the end.

Harper’s ex husband fell from a flat balcony to his death after she kicked him out of their shared home (which was absolutely justified as he physically assaulted her). We see his body after the fall, his legs broken and his hand impaled on a guard rail. Because everything thematically circles back to their relationship and the impact he had on Harper, of course the final Man in the village shares his notable injuries: including broken legs and a hand impaled and split, this time by a knife.
