9 Insanely Ambitious Upcoming Movies You Won't Believe
6. Basically Everything About Jojo Rabbit
When a young German boy in the middle of World War II feels isolated and lost, who can he turn to to offer guidance in his hour of need? That's right, his imaginary friend - Adolf Hitler.
Welcome to the mind of Taika Waititi.
Waititi is taking loose inspiration from the novel Caging Skies by author Christine Leunens, whilst adding a sprinkling of his typical dry wit to the proceedings. The director has already come out and lavished the film as an 'anti-hate satire' and divulged that he did 'zero research' because the guy is a 'f*cking c**t'.
Disney has recently acquired Fox and Jojo Rabbit will be one of Fox Searchlight's first releases under the House of Mouse's banner. This is where the risk factor comes into play for Waititi's dark-comedy, showcasing arguably the most hated figure in history as a boy's imaginary companion.
Is this the kind of publicity that such a family friendly company wants to have plastered across the world? There's no arguing that the film looks set to pull no punches and if the directors previous films are anything to go by, it won't lack warmth or heart (two of Disney's very own foundations) either.
Here's hoping that Waititi's gamble pays off or he may be forced to stick to watching over superheroes for the rest of his Disney tenure.
