The dry spell: 21 Bridges, Only the Brave, American Assassin, Bling, Lone Survivor

For a minute there, it appeared Taylor Kitsch HAD Hollywood. It was the early millennia, he was a handsome young star on Friday Night Lights and Disney was in talks about this little known property called John Carter.

A little TOO little-known, as it seemed. Disney had poured money into John Carter, their live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Borroughs' space adventurer. But no one cared, the movie flopped, as did Kitsch's career. He was given a second shot at the limelight almost immediately, heading up Peter Berg's adaptation of Mattel's Battleship. Like many a film based on a board game goes, however, so went his career.

The real challenge is to find five good movies Kitsch made in succession. Starting with his gambit to appear as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, such a list isn't possible. He's since resorted to patriotic fare like Lone Survivor and Only the Brave. Recently, he poured years of effort into researching David Koresh to play the cult leader in a mini-series opposite Michael Shannon.

The performance is fine, but it proves Kitsch never quite had it the way executives had hoped. He's merely decent, and it's a performance that will doubtfully lead to future feature work.
