9 More Actors Who Begged For Their Movie Characters To Die
5. Bruce Lee - Fist Of Fury
An actor and martial artist whose work was always
influenced by his personal philosophy, it goes without saying that fight film
icon Bruce Lee was obviously far from the cartoony arrogant caricature featured
in Tarantino’s recent Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. The thoughtful star
insisted on a fitting death for his character in 1972’s intense epic action spectacle
Fist of Fury, which remains one of his best remembered works.
Following a Chinese man in Japanese-occupied Shanghai who is attempting to avenge the death of his mentors, the film sees violence beget further violence and famously ends not with triumph but instead with the distraught hero throwing a last defiant move at the invading army, aware he’ll die but seeing no reason to live without his love interest and family to return to.
This iconic and fitting ending was added at Lee’s own insistence as the actor did not want to glamourise violence or portray revenge as anything but a tempting, terrible desire which dooms those who stoop to it.
