9 Movie Deaths You Hear Off-Screen That You Probably Missed The First Time
5. Irina - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
While it's made clear fairly early on in David Fincher's version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that something isn't quite kosher with Martin Vanger (Stellan SkarsgÄrd), the full extent of this shiftiness isn't confirmed until much later.
In the first act, you might recall a scene where Vanger is having a fancy dinner with his girlfriend Liv (Arly Jover) and Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig).
Vanger briefly excuses himself to close an open window after we hear what appears to be the sound of howling wind, though really sounds more like a wild animal screeching.
In actuality, this is the scream of an immigrant woman, Irina, who Vanger later confesses to Mikael was kept caged in his basement during this very dinner.
It's safe to assume that Vanger shut her up by killing her while pretending to close the window and fetch more wine, rather than risk being rumbled by any further screaming.
We don't hear the death itself, but in effect the absence of sound is chilling proof that Vanger quickly dealt with Irina, and presumably disposed of her corpse once Liv and Mikael left.
