9 Movie Franchises That Awkwardly Continued When Their Stars Bailed

2. Hannibal (2001)

hannibal brains You'd think that Jodie Foster turning down the chance to reprise her role as Clarice Starling for a sequel to Silence of the Lambs would have put a stop to any follow-ups, but the producers obviously thought that if they got Anthony Hopkins back on board it didn't really matter if she didn't want to. And so when Foster declined, it was Julianne Moore who took the plunge and signed on to play Agent Starling in Ridley Scott's Hannibal. They didn't want to get rid of that character entirely, of course, so what we got was a movie that awkwardly reunited these iconic characters (Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, of course), and one that felt surprisingly vapid and boring when compared to its predecessor - surprisingly so, considering Ridley Scott was at the helm. Fact is, the movie didn't feel right with Jodie Foster involved - she was more important than anybody perhaps realised.
