3. Halloween
The first Halloween ends on the note that Michael Myers is still out there, which could either just be an ominous ending or a set up a sequel. Halloween II decided to take the bait and pick up directly from there, taking place on the same night as the first one. It wraps things up nicely, but of course fans needed another. But then Halloween III: Season of the Witch decided to take a different approach. It doesnt have Michael Myers in it at all, the idea being that Halloween would turn into an anthology series where every year was a different story that took place on Halloween night. Everyone hated it, so the fourth movie brought back Michael Myers and things got complicated as they tried to stretch this into a franchise. In the fifth film, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, its revealed that Michael had a curse put on him by a demon worshipping cult. The curse requires him to offer a blood sacrifice of his next of kin on Halloween night. So why does Michael try to murder his family members? Is it just because hes an insane, mysterious psychopath? No, its because he had a curse put on him, obviously. This is also meant to explain why hes so strong and can apparently come back from the dead. Immediately, much of the horror and mystery of Michael Myers is lost. In the first movie, Michael is an unexplainable, crazy force of terror. He isn't a supernatural creature that comes after you in your dreams. He's just a guy with a knife who grabbed a cheap mask from the store. In some ways, that makes it even more terrifying. We also aren't ever quite clear on what his motivations are, and again that vagueness can make things all the more scary. But in the sequels, there's no mystery anymore.
