9 Movie Heroes & Villains That Didn't Know Each Other Existed

5. Paul Kersey & The Muggers - Death Wish

The Fifth Element
Paramount

In the original Death Wish, architect-turned-vigilante Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) is obviously aware that someone brutally assaulted his daughter and murdered his wife during a home invasion, but he doesn't know who.

And while we might assume Kersey would end up tracking down the three muggers by film's end, this actually isn't the case at all.

The trio exit the movie and though Kersey makes an effort to "clean up" the streets of New York City, he never deduces the precise culprits of his life-destroying trauma.

On the other hand, the three muggers never come into contact with Kersey either nor even have any idea who he is.

They simply commit a crime of horrific opportunity and take their leave, seemingly blissfully unaware that this act prompts the victims' father and husband to embark on a city-wide rampage of revenge.

It's certainly a more realistic outcome than in the increasingly cartoonish array of sequels, at least.
