9 Movie Scenes You Didn't Know Had A Guest Director
3. Dwight & Jackie Boy - Sin City
The first Sin City movie actually had three directors, with Quentin Tarantino a guest director alongside the main team of Frank Miller, the graphic novel’s original writer, and Robert Rodriquez.
Tarantino’s involvement came about through his friendship with Miller and his interest in the different cameras they used. Rodriquez had scored Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 2 for just $1, on the proviso that Tarantino shoot a Sin City scene for the same amount.
That scene was Dwight driving Jackie Boy’s dead, almost decapitated body to the tar pits, only for Jackie Boy to begin to talk.
Tarantino typically favours real film, while Rodriquez prefers digital, although they both prefer practical effects. Tarantino used Rodriquez’s favoured digital for the scene, keeping the practical effects; the smoke from Jackie Boy’s throat came from a thin pipe moulded into the plastic prosthetic wound.
When asked about his experience using digital on the film, he simply replied ‘mission accomplished’.
Away from Tarantino, Sin City saw Robert Rodriquez resign from the Director’s Guild as remaining would’ve meant Miller couldn’t be credited as co-director. This in turn saw him kicked off the John Carter movie; given how that turned out, it would have been fascinating to see Rodriquez’s take.
