9 Movie Scenes You Didn't Know Had A Guest Director

2. The Wig Commercial - Goodfellas

The wig commercial in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas had a guest director for a very clever (and actually quite funny) reason, completely different to anything else here.

Scorsese has had such a brilliant career that even a masterpiece like Goodfellas doesn’t stand alone as his best flick. Taxi Driver, The Departed, Wolf Of Wall Street, Gangs Of New York, Casino and Raging Bull could all easily oust it from the top five, though many would argue Goodfellas is indeed his magnum opus. And of course, who could forget about Shark Tale...

Goodfellas is gorgeous in places, brutal in others, and is superbly directed throughout.

The wig commercial though lacks this charm, and it’s deliberately designed this way.

Scorsese wanted it to have a naff, cheap feel to it. Of course, he could have just directed it himself and tried to make it naff, but he had a better idea. He had a friend who was a salesman himself, a friend who ran infomercials which were just the type of terrible Scorsese was looking for.

He asked the friend to direct the wig commercial just as he would direct his own, and the rest is history.
