9 Movie Sidekicks More Dangerous Than The Villain

3. Mary Goodnight - The Man With The Golden Gun

Often regarded as one of the worst Bond girls in the entire franchise, Mary Goodnight suffers from the same problem that Inspector Kate Moore did in The Enforcer: a complete lack of field experience. But even worse than Moore, Goodnight spends most of the film trying way too hard to be effective, whinging about the lack of respect Bond gives her, while simultaneously trying to get in bed with him. Scattered in amongst all of that, she inadvertently presses big red buttons with her backside, fails to plant homing devices on bad guy Scaramanga's car, and behaves as a general nuisance which Bond has no choice but to look after. She really begins to mess up when she pushes the maintenance man holding her captive into a pool of liquid helium on Scaramanga's island, leading to the whole place going into meltdown. Given that this meant destroying a bad guy's lair it could perhaps be initially forgiven, but in fact it put Bond in a pretty tight spot, still stuck on the self-destructing island with a job to do. Having just disposed of Scaramanga, it was probably a bit of a nuisance now having his life threatened by his incompetent accomplice. The character, played by Britt Ekland, was no doubt placed in the film purely for the purpose of prancing around in a skimpy bikini, but it's at the expense of 007's efficiency. Following a stint locked in a cupboard while Bond 'takes care of business' with Andrea Anders, Goodnight angrily announces that she intends to resign in the morning. Sadly, she doesn't.
