9 Movies That Were Really Just Feature-Length Adverts In Disguise

5. Batman And Robin

It€™s easy to view Batman And Robin just on it€™s own merits (or lack of), but looking at it within the context of its release it goes from an accidental terrible film to something that was bad semi-purposefully. Nowadays its vibrant-yet-dark colour scheme and Bat-nipples come across as misguided creativity, but they€™re born out of the film€™s devout focus on merchandising. Batman was as hot a property in 1997 as he is now and a kid friendly, object-filled film was the order of the day. There's obviously a lot on the surface to mock; just look at the YouTube clips that regularly do the rounds and allow those who haven€™t seen the film to irrationally (albeit correctly) hate it. But look beyond all the ice puns and Bat credit card at film itself and, rather than an example of Hollywood misunderstanding a source material, it€™s a cautionary tale of how you can€™t just throw action figures around a cardboard set and call it a movie. Joel Schumacher has since admitted he went into Batman with the wrong tact, but even he at his most remorseful (at one point amongst the defensive director€™s commentary he accepts responsibility) he seems unable to point the blame at the toys.
