9 Movies That End Without Solving A Major Problem

4. Nothing Has Really Changed - The Matrix Revolutions

Wizard Of Oz Toto
Warner Bros.

The Matrix sequels promised an epic climax to the story, and boy did they fumble. Although the Wachowski's were working against it - the original already explained that freeing a human mind from The Matrix beyond a certain age is dangerous, meaning if the resistance destroyed it they’d kill countless millions. Plus most would probably prefer to live in blissful ignorance than starve to death in the post-apocalyptic ruins of Earth; can't blame them really.

The Matrix Revolutions avoided this sticky conundrum with one hell of an anti-climax. After Neo defeats Smith in the final battle - resulting in both their deaths - the machines declare a truce with the human rebellion instead of wiping them out. So does that mean The Matrix will be unplugged, and the rest of humanity will be set free?

Nope, it just means the rebels are free to release anyone they want but the machines get to use the rest as a power source. So in essence, nothing has changed, and the epic climax amounts to the machines vowing to be less dickish.

Hurray?

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
